Synopsis: (About Story and Movie Review and Interviews)

A story based on a custom called ‘Natha Pratha”, states that for any reason if a woman wants to leave her husband, her father or any other person who supports her has to pay compensation to her husband.
The amount of compensation is decided by the people who hold judicial post (‘Panchayat’). If the said amount cannot be paid for whatever reasons the said woman is punished by villagers for leaving her husband. And the punishment can be as degrading as stripping and parading her naked in front of the whole village. But on the contrary if husband wants to leave a woman, he need not give any reason or explanation for doing so. He can enjoy the free will for the same.

This inspiration of the film is based on a story of a woman who was given a verdict of similar punishment. In this story, the said woman “Sanja” meets a spirit of “Ambalika” who belongs to the 18th Century (Buddha period) . ‘Ambalika’ had undergone similar situation during her existence. Amba’s spirit will only receive salvation once she sees some woman standing up to fight against this custom of looking down upon a woman. A woman should be able to have some breathing space in this male-dominated society.

In this era, where we talk of equal rights for men and women, women are still looked down upon, as a mere object of desire, lust and bearing children in spite of being the very source of mankind’s existence.

This woman who is tortured by her husband and the caste, instead of being bogged down by the pressure of punishment throws away her inhibitions and stands up against this custom; she maintains her dignity and courage as a woman and gives new definition to womanhood.

From director’s desk……….

In life, sometimes a woman is compiled to think that being a woman is most saddest and ridiculous joke of a nature. I was going through a very depressing passage of my life. I was bogged down by the cosmopolitan pressure of leading a life a to escape from this very pressure I shifted my base to a very small town of Rajasthan for all those days,…….months…….& years of my life, where I found a string of new life waiting for me to unfold it.

During that phase I met a woman worker, who was married and her husband use to humiliate abuse and beat her, as she was unable to bear children. Her husband had two wives, one sharda and the other one. Sharda had taken shelter with another man who was her lover to escape from all the humiliation she had had to undergo due to her husband. Sharda, when she wanted to break-free from her husband, her husband her relatives and friends and the people who had judicial rights to give justice, gave her a punishment of giving a compensation of a big amount, which was out of reach for a poor woman or else she will be stripped and paraded naked in front of village. She was not having the specified amount to save herself from the said punishment. I helped her out…. & saved her.

I began thinking….women exploitation is not new to our era, we find glimpses of it since 18th century or may be even before that ….I remembered about the period of Buddha…..similar story…..oh my God! All things have undergone a phenomenal change but…..the exploitation of women continues…

A thought crossed my mind…. I saved one sharda, but will I be able to reach all the shardas who are facing similar trauma. This film is devoted to all shardas who are struggling to fight of their very existence……..

IslamChannel (Islam Channel) Information:
Islam Channel is a UK-based, free-to-air, English language, Islamic-focused satellite television channel. It broadcasts across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa and is streamed live on the internet – it is soon to commence broadcasting in North America. Islam Channel began broadcasting on March 2004 on |Sky Digital channel 836, but subsequently moved to channel 813.
Since its launch, the channel has expanded its range of programming, including programmes regarding current affairs, education, Islamic values, Islamic doctrine, as well as domestic, financial and community related topics. The channel is said to have a viewing audience of over several million, while its target audience is mainly English-speaking Muslims.

History of the channel
* The channel was the original effort of Mohammed Sajid, Shaheen Akhtar, Asif Malik, Salauddin Ali, Ibrahim Rashid and Faisal Nazir. they have all left the Channel but Salahuddin has now returned as Managing Director.
* The Global Peace and Unity 2006 attracted 57,0000 people. However there were a large number of complaints regarding poor organisation.
* Muhammad Ali remains the CEO
* On 31 July 2007, the channel was fined £30,000 by the UK broadcasting regulator Ofcom for allowing staff, including journalist Yvonne Ridley, to present news and current affairs programmes whilst standing as candidates in elections.

Aims of Islam Channel
* Islam Channel aims to be an informational as well as an entertainment medium for Muslim populations as well as Non-Muslim populations. It aspires to raise public awareness about Islam, Muslims and issues concerning them, especially in the light of perceived misinformation prevalent in today’s global community. It aims to form bridges of mutual understanding and awareness between communities. It also aims to educate Muslims and Non-Muslims about Islam, inviting them to research it further.
* There has been a large demand amongst Muslims to have an alternative media source and television station by which authentic information on Islam and current affairs can be obtained, as well as a station which is sensitive to Islamic morals and ethics, and Islam Channel is perceived to be one step towards realising that goal.

Popular Programmes
There are a number of programmes enjoying significant popularity amongst Muslims globally which cover entertainment, current affairs, community activities, women’s issues as well as Islamic education.

Islam Channel News
Perhaps the most watched programme on the channel, now that the world-famed ‘Agenda’ discussion programme has been taken off-air.
Islam Channel News is the first-ever attempt to provide global Islamic news in the English language.
Our aim is to bring viewers all the stories and issues that affect Muslims in the UK and abroad.
We aim to succeed where the mainstream media fails – to properly represent the interests and convey the viewpoints of the global Ummah. In short, to give Muslims the voice that has been denied them for so long by the western broadcast and print media.
We will ask the questions that others do not dare ask, and delve into areas where others will not go.
However, we do not believe in peddling propaganda and rest committed to representing both sides of the story fairly. We will not, under any circumstances, patronise our viewers and will let them make up their own minds about the rights and wrongs of a particular story.
We firmly believe that Muslims seeking news about all the major issues at home and abroad, like Iraq, Palestine, Kashmir and many others, should consider Islam Channel News their main outlet.

Behind the Veil
* Currently on a break (contactable at behindtheveil[at]islamchannel.tv)
Behind the Veil is an educational programme hosted by two presenters named Hoda Al Soudani and Shahida Mohamed Ali. It is aimed at the Muslim youth with the intention of addressing the relevant cultural and social issues from an Islamic perspective, as well as sharing information about and related to Islam. The programme also contains regular book reviews to discuss and recommend notable publications, and has in the past covered books such as The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Forty Hadiths of al-Nawawi, and Companions of the Prophet by Abdul Waahid Haamid . Programme details and summaries are put on the Internet for archiving.
Having assumed broadcast since 2005, Behind the Veil currently airs every Sunday at 1500 GMT with a repeat the following Tuesday at 4pm.

Hassan and Habibah
Hassan as-Saleemi and Habibah Ellahee are married co-hosts of this light social affairs programme. They are widely known among Muslims as “Hassan and Habibah”, their show is entitled ‘The Hassan and Habibah Show’. The show is described as a
“unique show..live husband and wife talk show discussing issues with different guests. This refreshing weekly discussion show examines social issues that deal with family, marriage and various other topics”.
They are noted for challenging mainly South-Asian cultural perceptions on the nature of Islam, dealing with topics such as: forced marriage; domestic violence with the Muslim women’s helpline; depression with the Muslim Youth Helpline; and infertility problems with Dr Mohammad Taranissi.
They have on occasion dealt with more serious topics, specifically on the 25 December, 2004 in a 2-hour special, they did a show entitled “Prisoners of Iman”, discussing cases of Muslims that have been imprisoned for their faith, or political activity. ShahRukh Khan and Salman Khan Friend Color Tv Kareena Kapoor and Ajay Devgun to enter the Bigg Boss house. After The Great Khali’s grand entry in the Salman Khan anchored show, now it’s the turn of the sexy saucy Kareena Kapoor to take a trip of the house. And she would be accompanied by the dusky Ajay Devgun. However, they are not to spend a night or a week in that camera-filled house.

Rather, they would be there to promote their upcoming Diwali flick ‘Golmaal 3’. The 3rd edition of the comic caper releases this Diwali on 5th November and hence, as a part of promotion strategy, the Golmaal team would be paying a visit to the controversially renowned house.

So, this Diwali, expect to see the likes of Ajay, Kareena, the mute Tusshar Kapoor, the feisty Shreyas Talpade, circuit Arshad Warsi and Kunal Khemu inside the house in a special episode.

And they won’t be the only one benefitting from such an arrangement. Even the Bigg Boss producers shall feel their pockets heavier as the Bollywood stars’ presence would, certainly, grab more eyeballs and add to the TRPs. Bigg Boss is already feeling the discomforting presence of Amitabh Bachchan’s KBC that airs at the same time on a different channel.

The Most watched star show on TV. The TRPs or Television Rating Points for the big ticket shows are in. So did Amitabh Bachchan beat Salman Khan on the small screen, or did Rakhi Sawant have the last laugh?

We take a look at the performances of Bigg Boss 4, Kaun Banega Crorepati 4, MasterChef India, Rakhi Ka Insaf and the recently-concluded Khatron Ke Khiladi on their opening nights.

Andar maja toh baahar majedaar promised the enfant terrible of Bollywood. Salman Khan had swapped channels from Sony Entertainment Television to Colors.

He was also taking over from Amitabh ‘pop philosopher’ Bachchan claiming to bring his own candid, saucy, sparkling personality to the murky goings-on inside the Bigg Boss House. And he lived up to the expectations as he welcomed the 14 guests in his inimitable bindaas style, bringing the house down with his antics.

While the daily episodes have been a let-down, hardly any maja, ‘bhai’s’ weekend visits are proving to be quite a riot. Majedaar? Absolutely!

The weekly task that has been handed out to the housemates this week, is all about peace and respect for others. All the housemates were asked to wash the feet of the other housemates and later they were also asked to dress up in a special white costume. They also had to don special hats and footwear, which were same for all of them. They had to chant a special mantra and had to praise and also point out one bad quality of the person who was standing next to them in the group activity.

Veena said about Sakshi that she doesn’t perform her allocated work properly. This upset Sakshi no end and she then threatened Veena. Veena went up to the captain of the house – Begum and complained about it. Begum tried to pacify her and went to Sakshi to talk about it, but Sakshi kept on narrating her own tale. Almost everyone in the Bigg Boss house was miffed with her, as she cuts corners while performing any of the allocated tasks and is always on the lookout to somehow wriggle her way out of the task.

Veena and Shweta were seen exchanging notes in private about the scandalous men in their lives. Shweta seemed calm and composed despite the fact that her personal life was the talk of the town during her divorce proceedings.
