The Future Smart Home

Take a tour of the Smarthome where control is the name of the game. Control your lights, appliances and more with a single keypad. Life is made easy with motion sensors, whole home audio and more.
smart Home is the term commonly used to define a residence that uses a Home Controller to integrate the residence's various home automation systems. The most popular Home Controllers are those that are connected to a Windows based PC during programming only, and are then left to perform the home control duties on a stand-alone basis. Integrating the home systems allows them to communicate with one another through the home controller, thereby enabling single button and voice control of the various home systems simultaneously, in preprogrammed scenarios or operating modes.

For example, a scenario such as I'm Home could be triggered by pressing one button on a Keychain Remote from your vehicle as you approach the driveway. The Home Controller receives the Keychain Remote command triggering a scenario, preprogrammed and stored in the home controller. The celestial clock in the controller knows that it is 8 pm and past sunset, in your geographical location, therefore starting the scenario by sequentially turning on the lighting in the driveway, garage entry, walkway, hallway, and kitchen. It then disarms the security system, opens the garage door, unlocks the interior garage entry door, adjusts the thermostat(s) to a preset home position, and turns on the whole-house audio system. The home control processor is essentially the Hub of the home systems network, as shown in the Stargate example below. The Home Control Processor is programmed to customer specific requirements to initiate sequential automatic operation of the home systems, in response to "one button" commands from a system controller, based on the situation and or time.

Other time saving scenarios such as "Party Time", "Away", "Good Night" etc. involving several home systems can be activated by phone, voice, and remotes as desired. A home systems status check is also a convenient feature to add to the "Good Night" scenario. In addition to automatically turning off all lights and adjusting the thermostats, the system will also provide an audio report indicating the status of the security system by zone, the temperature in each zone, the position of the garage doors, and the "wakeup" times selected.

PC Networks PC Networks are quickly becoming an essential element of today's Smart Homes. A Windows 98 release2 PC Network allows all of the family PCs to share resources including one connection, and one account to the Internet, simultaneously. This is also convenient for smart home system upgrades, since much of the home automation and home systems equipment is PC programmable and equipment manufacturers now provide the software upgrades via the Internet. The Internet connection will increasingly play a major role in the operation and monitoring of our homes.

Microsoft 1st Step for Future Dream Home Living Tomorrow House of the Future

Living Tomorrow was founded in 1991 by architects Frank Belien and Peter Bongers. Their mission was to create a platform on which several companies could show their innovative ideas. The first Living Tomorrow home was opened on the 16th of march 1995 in Vilvoorde. Bill Gates had the honor to open Living Tomorrow. This Project lasted until the year 2000 and was a big success. A second Living Tomorrow was opened and since 2007 it is already the third home that has opened its doors.

Innovations within Living Tomorrow
There are many innovative products in the Living Tomorrow house. Some are meant for everybody but there is also a project which is cold elderly home. This project specializes in letting elderly live independent in there homes for as long as possible. Much of those Living tomorrow innovations are also nice for everyone. Think of a self sustainable kitchen. It keeps records of what’s in storage and if products tend to run out, it orders new ones and let it be brought to your home. Even brushing your teeth becomes innovative with the special computer mirror. While standing in front of it, you can watch the news or look up the weather forecast.

Microsoft's Future Home

Microosoft Future Dreams Plans Technology

Microsoft DreamFuture dreams of Microsoft dream latest future dreams technology the future impossible high prograss lovely life.Three years ago, Bill Gates looked like a dummy for carrying around a tablet. Steve Jobs was ragging on netbooks and tablets when he was rolling out the MacBook Air. Now, eight months post-iPad, everybody’s pushing out tablets, and netbooks are looking very 2007. But any death notices anyone puts out for the netbook are premature.

Let’s check the numbers. One of the big research reports thrown around is from Forrester Research, which predicts that tablets will outsell netbooks by 2012, pass netbooks in total usage by 2014, and have a 23% share of all PCs (a category that for Forrester includes everything from a tablet on up) by 2015. By 2015, Forrester predicts, netbooks will only have 17 percent of the PC market, just behind desktops with 18 percent.

Wait a minute — 17 percent of all computers in 2015 will be netbooks? About as many netbooks as desktops? And the whole personal computing pie is going to continue to grow? Maybe this is silly, but — isn’t that still really, really good?

The tablet has mindshare, but not yet market share. Netbooks are already starting to strap on the powerful new dual-core mobile processors that will give them full computing parity with notebooks. And the two innovations of netbooks, small screens and small hard drives, have already come uncoupled — you have lightweight, large-screen/low-storage devices like the MacBook Air or Samsung N150 and compact, high-powered netbooks like the 250GB MSI Wind U160. They’re all getting better at managing battery life, too, which remains the real bane of all portable computers, netbook and tablet alike.

CES 2010 - Sharp Quadpixel Technology Explained

CES 2010 - Sharp Quadpixel Technology Explained

Sharp decided the standard Red, Green, Blue light spectrum simply wasn’t enough for TV viewers, so this year they debuted a new color at CES 2010, Yellow. The companies new QuadPixel units, featured in a variety of viewable sizes brings new vivid yellows to the screen.

The units feature Edge-light LED for an ultra-slim depth effect which pulls colors out at the user in vivid coloring, one of the more impressive outputs I’ve seen at CES this year. The sets I viewed also offers 120hz refresh rates, making me believe a 240hz unit will offer even more output capabilities in the near future.

According to Sharp reps, the television also features over 1 trillion color output, that’s compared to approx. 1 billion with the traditional RGB color scale.

The units are also setup with energy efficiency in mind, ensuring users get the most of their TV and the least out of their phone bills.

Sharp has also included AQUOS net with Netflix capabilities for streaming video capabilities. While Sharp also offers Aquos Advantage Live which is an internet based service used to perform remote diagnosis of your televsion and to perform software updates as they become available.

I spotted the 46, 52 and 60 inch displays and they all looked amazing.

Here’s a few more shots of the Sharp QuadPixel technology in action.
Tony from Sharp explains the technology behind the new Sharp quadpixel. To comment on this video and the technology featured.

CES 2010 Core i7 Extreme Edition Laptop

CES 2010: Core i7 Extreme Edition Laptop
Core i7

CES 2010 Core i7 Extreme Edition Laptop. Intel’s Core i7 processors continue to dominate the desktop world in terms of raw speed. The new quad-core 3.33GHz Core i7-975 Extreme Edition is a few hairs faster than the previous champ, the 3.2GHz Core i7-965 Extreme Edition, and it has the same stratospheric $1,000 price tag. If your pockets are as deep as your desire for bragging rights, or you're a media professional who can really use this much processing muscle, shelling out for the fastest desktop processor money can buy might be worth it. But for everyone else, the Core i7-975 Extreme Edition is all kinds of overkill.

We were certainly impressed with the initial Core i7 CPUs when they debuted late last year. After all, they offered unprecedented performance far above and beyond the capabilities of any CPU from competitor AMD. Now, more than six months later, the 3.33GHz clock speed of the Core i7-975 Extreme Edition is only a notch faster than that of its Core i7 predecessor, but in our benchmark tests, it still dominates the top-end CPU from AMD, the Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition. That said, that Phenom II chip can be had for under $250, while Intel’s high-end chip costs four times as much. And much to the dismay of both CPU makers, there still isn’t a whole lot of software around these days that takes full advantage of four processing cores. That's why we think, for most users who want smart, top-value CPU speed, AMD’s dual-core Phenom II X2 550 is such a wise choice at around $100.

If you go with the Core i7-975 Extreme Edition, aside from the grand you’ll have to shell out for the processor, you’ll also have to pony up several hundred additional dollars for a compatible X58 motherboard and triple-channel memory. AMD’s Phenom CPUs, meanwhile, are backward-compatible with last-generation AM2+ motherboards and exceedingly cheap DDR2 RAM. The Core i7-975 Extreme Edition is worth the price for video and graphics professionals who typically spend hours waiting for files to render. But for most users, even hard-core gamers and overclockers, the only way you’ll tax a processor like this today or in the foreseeable future is with a benchmark-testing application or a video-editing suite such as Sony Vegas Pro.

Despite those caveats, there’s no denying the Core i7-975’s impressive, though unsurprising, performance in testing. It left AMD’s top-of-the-line Phenom II X4 955 in the dust and, in most cases, outpaced the Core i7-965 by a not-insignificant amount. In our Sony Vegas 8 test, designed specifically to tax all CPU cores, the Core i7-975 Extreme Edition finished our MP4 rendering trial in an amazing 26 seconds, while the Core i7-965 took 50 seconds to tackle that task, and AMD’s Phenom II X4 955 took 1 minute and 24 seconds. In Cinebench 10, another test that taxes multiple cores, the Core i7-975 scored 19,973 to the Core i7-965’s score of 15,740; the Phenom II X4 955 managed just 10,454.

Our iTunes conversion test didn’t have such disparate results, revealing the real-world limitations of these high-end processors when tackling everyday tasks. The AMD Phenom II X4 955 converted our 11 test tracks in 2 minutes and 58 seconds; the Core i7-965 did so 12 seconds faster, and the new Core i7-975 chopped off another 21 seconds, completing in 2 minutes and 25 seconds.

In all of these tests, the Core i7-975 broke new records, but it wasn’t revolutionary. It’s definitely extremely fast, but there’s no reason that anyone who owns a previous Core i7 chip should feel compelled to upgrade at current prices. Like the previous Core i7 Extreme Edition CPU, and AMD’s Black Edition CPUs, the Core i7-975 features an unlocked multiplier for easy overclocking. But frankly, we can't see many applications that would make it worth the effort and risk to try squeezing more speed out of this CPU. It’s the best there is by a fair amount, and the price matches its performance.

There’s no denying this is the supercar of CPUs. The problem is, these days, the vast majority of everyday PC tasks stress new CPUs about as much as driving around the corner for milk taxes a Honda Civic.

6 Swiss Solar Cell Inventor Honored with 2010 Millennium Technology Prize

6 Swiss Solar Cell Inventor Honored with 2010 Millennium Technology Prize

6 Swiss Solar Cell Inventor Honored with 2010 Millennium Technology Prize
Swiss scientist Michael Graetzel won the 2010 Millennium Technology Prize on Wednesday for helping to develop cheap solar cells for renewable energy projects.

The German-born chemist, director of the photonics and interfaces laboratory at Ecole Polytechnique de Lausanne in the Swiss city of the same name — was awarded 800,000 euros ($960,000) by the Technology Academy of Finland for his innovation, which led to the development of electricity-generating windows and mobile solar panels.

The Finnish academy said finding ways to replace the Earth's diminishing fossil fuel supply was one of mankind's greatest challenges, adding that the sun is "the most obvious energy source."

"The constraint of solar energy has traditionally been its price. Graetzel cells provide a more affordable way of harnessing solar energy," said Ainomaija Haarla, president of the academy. "Graetzel's innovation is likely to have an important role in low-cost, large-scale solutions for renewable energy."

The academy described the price-performance ratio of Graetzel's cells as "excellent," adding that they had just made their commercial debut.

"The technology often described as 'artificial photosynthesis' ... is made of low-cost materials and does not need an elaborate apparatus to manufacture," the academy said.

Graetzel, 66, won the main prize, while runners up — Sir Richard Friend and Stephen Furber, both British — were each awarded euro150,000 ($180,000)

for plastic electronics and microprocessors.

Friend, a professor of physics at the University of Cambridge, was cited for inventing organic Light Emitting Diodes, known as LEDs, "a crucial milestone in plastic electronics."

"Electronic paper, cheap organic solar cells and illuminating wall paper are examples of the revolutionary future products his work has made possible," the international award committee said.

Furber, a professor of computer engineering at the University of Manchester, is the principal designer of the 32-bit ARM microprocessor that the academy said "has revolutionized mobile electronics."

"The ingeniously designed processor enabled the development of cheap, powerful, handheld, battery-operated devices. In the past 25 years, nearly 20 billion ARM-based chips have been manufactured," it added.

Stig Gustavson, chairman of the academy's board, said that all three inventions "benefit mankind as broadly as possible, both today and in the future."

It was the fourth time that Finland has awarded the biennial Millennium Technology Prize, launched by the government and Finnish industry in 2004. The prizes are for achievements in energy and the environment, communications and information, new materials and processes as well as for health care and life sciences.

The previous winner, in 2008, was American Professor Robert Langer from MIT for developing bio-materials used in combating cancer and heart disease.

Other winners include Japanese professor Shuji Nakamura and MIT scientist Tim Berners-Lee.

Since its founding in 1991, Microsoft Research has grown into one of the largest, and most respected software research organizations in the world. Today, more than 850 of the brightest minds in computer science work in eight locations, across four continents, on a mission that has stayed the same for nearly 20 years: to advance the state of the art in computing through a combination of basic and applied research.

Rick Rashid, Senior Vice President, Microsoft ResearchThe reason is simple: innovation is the lifeblood of Microsoft’s products and services. As our researchers solve the toughest problems in computing, share their ideas with the greater research community, and collaborate with Microsoft product groups, they’re ensuring that the company — and the industry — will continue to find new ways for technology to enhance our world for years to come.

To be successful, basic and applied research depends on three practices essential for any venture: building mutually beneficial relationships, maintaining effective two-way communication, and nurturing bonds of trust. We carry out these practices through collaboration with internal product teams, and external researchers.

Our labs are unique among corporate research facilities in that they balance an open academic model with an effective process for building research results into product development. This approach, unique among corporate research facilities, pays off for Microsoft as enhancements to virtually every product and service it offers and as entirely new lines of business for the company. At the same time, it produces significant technological and intellectual advances across the spectrum of computer science.

Our contributions to Microsoft are reflected in the company’s sustained investment in research and development. Unlike other companies, where research projects must be funded by individual product groups, Microsoft funds its research at the corporate level to ensure that we are looking beyond immediate product considerations to problems further in the future.

We are excited to be developing technologies that weave software, hardware, and services into every aspect of our lives, thereby advancing toward the goal of making computers genuinely useful — We see a future in which computers interact with people the way we interact with each other, think ahead to anticipate and meet our needs, and support us as we make the most of our ideas, efforts, and intellect. Developing next-generation software that improves people’s lives is stimulating work, and we look forward to the breakthroughs we’ll make in the years ahead. TechFair 2010:Bing Technology Transfer

FB is only as big as the people who use it. Gmail Priority Inbox Video

Gmail Priority Inbox

How Does Gmail's Priority Inbox Work for You?
Google announced their new Priority Inbox feature last week, and ever since we've been eagerly testing how good Google is at knowing what emails are important to us—and we're wondering how it's doing for you, too.

I'm personally of two minds about it. Priority Inbox has been doing really well with my personal account, and despite a few hiccups (it insists on marking every email from Facebook as important no matter how many times I mark them otherwise), I've been really happy with it. I've been finding it a lot easier to reach Priority Inbox Zero than I'd previously had reaching regular old Inbox Zero, despite all the email filtering in the world.

On my Lifehacker account—where I receive hundreds of emails every day—I'm not sure where to begin with Priority Inbox. I've played around with it, but I'm having a hard time understanding how it decides to promote or not, and I'm not sure what amount of tweaking I can do to get it to a reliable point. It's obviously necessary to ensure Priority Inbox knows my inbox well enough that I wouldn't have to worry that I'm missing a lot of important stuff, which is why, for now at least, I'm not using it on my highest-volume inbox. (Incidentally, that's clearly the inbox I need it most for.)

So while we're sharing Priority Inbox experiences, let's take a broad, snap judgment poll of what you think of it.

Gmail Priority Inbox | Gmail Introduces New Features

Get through your email faster

Email is great, except when there’s too much of it. Priority Inbox automatically identifies your important email and separates it out from everything else, so you can focus on what really matters.
E-mail is a double-edged sword when it comes to productivity. The benefits of e-mail as a communications tool can easily be lost in the sea of nonsense that floods most inboxes, though--and that is after the spam is filtered out. Google is introducing a new experimental feature aimed at helping Gmail users sort it all out: Priority Inbox.

The vast majority of the e-mail ones and zeros zipping around the Internet are actually spam--as much as 92 percent by some estimates. However, the three percent that are left still make up a significant number of e-mails, and--even among that small slice of the e-mail pie--most of the messages are frivolous and unimportant.

A post on the Official Google Blog clarifies the purpose of Priority Inbox. "Gmail has always been pretty good at filtering junk mail into the "spam" folder. But today, in addition to spam, people get a lot of mail that isn't outright junk but isn't very important--bologna, or "bacn." So we've evolved Gmail's filter to address this problem and extended it to not only classify outright spam, but also to help users separate this "bologna" from the important stuff. In a way, Priority Inbox is like your personal assistant, helping you focus on the messages that matter without requiring you to set up complex rules."

The Priority Inbox segregates Gmail into three different categories: "Important and Unread", "Starred", and "Everything Else". Gmail automatically filters incoming e-mail into either "Important and Unread" or "Everything Else", while the middle category is populated by those messages that have been flagged for future reference.

The process of filtering messages into the "Important and Unread" folder is similar to the concept of spam filtering, but in reverse. Google has developed an algorithm for Gmail which predicts whether or not a message is important based on a variety of criteria. Contacts you frequently e-mail, and message threads that you typically open or reply to are assumed to be higher priority. The best part, though, is that messages can be flagged as important or marked as unimportant to help Priority Inbox learn and improve over time.

I get hundreds of e-mails a day, not including the spam. Of the hundreds of messages that actually make it to my Inbox, the vast majority are still frivolous time-wasters, or can at least be deferred until later. A tool like Priority Inbox that can intuitively sift the incoming e-mail so I can focus on the messages that need my attention the most can be a significant productivity booster.

Google estimates that Priority Inbox can have a significant impact on productivity and the bottom line. Google explains "When we tested Priority Inbox at Google, we found that people spent 6 percent less time on e-mail after enabling this feature. This translates to a week's worth of time saved each year for information workers who typically spend 13 hours per week on e-mail today."

Because the Priority Inbox feature is a beta tool, users in companies that rely on Google Apps will not be able to take advantage of it unless the IT admin has configured Google Apps to enable "pre-release" features to be used.
